Tin Bronze

Tin bronze is a copper alloy with copper as the main element and tin as the main alloying element. Typically, the tin content ranges from 3% to 20%, with different contents resulting in different properties. In addition to copper and tin, it usually contains small amounts of other elements such as phosphorus, zinc, and lead to further improve its specific properties.

Product Series

We offer a wide range of tin bronze products, including wire, rods, and plates. Each product is designed to meet specific performance requirements. Our product range includes:

  • Tin bronze wire: A wire material made by pressure processing (rolling, stretching). It has excellent plasticity, strength, elasticity and fatigue resistance, good corrosion resistance, good processability, and is easy to bend, wind, weld and cut.

  • Tin bronze rods: a high-performance, wear-resistant structural material. When you need to manufacture critical parts such as bearings, bushings, and gears that operate in medium-to-high speed, heavy-load, corrosive, or non-magnetic environments, tin bronze rods are often the preferred solution.

Composition and alloy type

Tin bronze alloys come in various grades, each with its own specific properties and elemental composition:

  • C51000: Contains 0.03% - 0.35% phosphorus and 4.8% - 6.0% tin. It is a typical tin-phosphorus bronze that provides a perfect combination of sufficient strength, excellent elasticity and good processability, making it a very popular and practical elastic material in the electronics, electrical and general machinery industries.

  • C54400 (QSn4-4-2.5/ QSn4-4-4): Phosphorus content: 0.01% - 0.50%, Tin content: 3.5% - 4.5%, Lead content: 3.5% - 4.5%. While maintaining the basic properties of tin-phosphor bronze, the addition of lead results in extremely excellent machinability. It is a high-performance wear-resistant copper alloy optimized for efficient machining.

  • C51900 (QSn6.5-0.1): Phosphorus content: 0.03% - 0.35%, Tin content: 5.5% - 7.0%. It is a high-performance, widely used tin-phosphor bronze, known as the "King of Elasticity". It perfectly balances strength, elasticity and durability, making it the material of choice for high-end elastic components.

Physical and mechanical properties

The physical properties of tin bronze depend primarily on its composition (the ratio of copper to tin) and are less affected by its processing conditions.

  • Density: 8.7 - 8.9 g/cm³, decreasing slightly with increasing tin content.

  • Thermal and electrical conductivity: General; not suitable for use as critical components requiring high thermal/electrical conductivity.

  • Tensile strength & hardness: At the same tin content, the strength of hard (cold-worked) materials is much higher than that of soft (annealed) materials. As the tin content increases, both strength and hardness also increase.

Common Applications

  • Springs and elastic elements: Electronics, electrical appliances, instruments, and machinery industries.

  • Wear-resistant parts: Weaving various wear-resistant meshes; steel wire ropes and load-bearing cables in mechanical equipment.

  • Welding materials: Soldering electrodes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What are the differences between tin bronze and aluminum bronze? How should I choose?

A: For applications requiring excellent sliding wear resistance and anti-galling properties, such as bearings and bushings, choose tin bronze. For applications requiring higher strength, hardness, and resistance to erosion and corrosion, such as heavy-duty gears, propellers, and valves, choose aluminum bronze.

Q: How well is tin bronze machinable?

A: The machinability of tin bronze is generally rated as "good" to "excellent". Lead-containing tin bronze (such as QSn4-4-2.5) has excellent machinability, with easy chip breaking and a smooth machined surface.

Lead-free tin bronze has slightly poorer machinability, but good machining results can still be achieved by selecting appropriate tool angles and cutting parameters.

Q: How should tin bronze castings or parts be maintained and cared for?

A: Keep clean and dry: Storage and use environments should avoid humid and corrosive atmospheres.

Regular lubrication: For moving parts such as bearings, ensuring proper lubrication is key to extending their lifespan.

Avoid overload: Avoid subjecting parts to impacts or loads exceeding their design limits.

Regular inspection: Inspect for wear and replace worn parts promptly to prevent damage to mating components.
