Phosphor Bronze

Phosphor bronze is an important copper alloy, primarily composed of copper and tin, with a certain amount of phosphorus. Its main characteristics include excellent wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and good elasticity. Due to these properties, it is widely used in the manufacture of springs, bearings, conductive components, and other industrial parts requiring high strength and wear resistance.

Product Range

We offer a wide range of phosphor bronze products, including wires, rods, and plates. Each product is designed to meet specific performance requirements. Our product range includes:

  • Phosphor bronze wire: It possesses excellent electrical conductivity, superior elasticity and fatigue resistance, and wear resistance, making it suitable for electrical connections and wires. It can be used to manufacture various springs, connectors, and joints, and can also be used to manufacture components that operate under frictional conditions.

  • Phosphor bronze rods: can be used to manufacture wear-resistant and load-bearing parts, as a core material for elastic elements, electrical connections and conductive components, antimagnetic components, corrosion-resistant components, sculptures, decorative strips, musical instrument parts, etc.

Composition and alloy type

Phosphor bronze alloys come in various grades, each with its own specific properties and elemental composition:

  • C51000 : Contains 0.03% - 0.35% phosphorus and 4.8% - 6.0% tin, and is the "King of Elasticity" in the phosphor bronze family. It maximizes elasticity and fatigue resistance while maintaining high strength, high wear resistance, and good corrosion resistance.

  • C54400 (QSn4-4-2.5/ QSn4-4-4): Contains 0.01% - 0.50% phosphorus, 3.5% - 4.5% tin, and 3.5% - 4.5% lead, and is the "Machining Expert" in the phosphor bronze family. It possesses unparalleled machinability and self-lubricating wear resistance.

  • C51900 (QSn6.5-0.1): Phosphorus content: 0.03% - 0.35%, Tin content: 5.5% - 7.0%, is a "high-performance all-rounder" in the phosphor bronze family. It achieves the best balance between strength, hardness, elasticity, wear resistance and cold workability.

Physical and mechanical properties

Phosphor bronze has relatively stable physical properties, which are mainly affected by its composition and are not sensitive to heat treatment.

  • Density range: 8.86 - 8.94 g/cm³, increasing slightly with increasing tin content.

  • Mechanical properties: Extremely sensitive to material state (annealed, hardened, etc.), with a wide range of variation.

  • Tensile strength: Annealed: 350 - 450 MPa; Hardened: 600 - 900 MPa

  • Wear resistance: Excellent. The hard phase of phosphorus and the high hardness of the alloy itself give it outstanding wear resistance, making it particularly suitable for friction components such as bearings and bushings. Through solid solution strengthening (tin) and cold work hardening, phosphor bronze can achieve very high strength and hardness, far superior to pure copper and many brasses.

  • High elastic limit: Capable of withstanding high stress without permanent deformation.

Common Applications

  • Electronic products: such as cables, connectors, switches, etc.

  • Automotive industry: used for connection and conductive components in automotive electrical systems.

  • Aerospace: utilized in aircraft components due to its lightweight and high-temperature resistance.

  • Industrial equipment: used to manufacture key components for various industrial machinery.

With its excellent performance and diverse applications, phosphor bronze wire has become an indispensable material in modern industry.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Will phosphor bronze rust?

A: Copper alloys don't rust like iron. However, phosphor bronze can oxidize in certain environments, forming a green patina (basic copper carbonate) on its surface. This patina actually acts as a protective layer, preventing further corrosion of the internal metal. In most industrial and residential environments, phosphor bronze exhibits excellent corrosion resistance.

Q: How is phosphor bronze processed?

A: It is ideal for stamping, turning, milling, drilling, etc. Due to its good ductility, it is also easy to bend and shape.

Q: Can phosphor bronze be electroplated?

A: Yes, and it's very common. Phosphor bronze parts are often electroplated to improve weldability, increase corrosion resistance, enhance appearance, or reduce contact resistance.
